Gabuza: Give people what they want

Gabuza is very aware of how demanding and fickle football fans can be.

Thamsanqa Gabuza is a soft spoken somebody whose goal is to make sure that supporters who watch football at the stadium, the comfort of their homes or wherever else are always given what they want, and that is good football.

While that was not the case for Gabuza during certain periods at Orlando Pirates as the goals ran dry, he is delivering the goods now at SuperSport United, leading the frontline alongside Bradley Grobler. Gabuza has four goals to his name so far. He once said the pressure he gets at United is much different from that he got from supporters of the Soweto giant.

However, one thing that has remained consistent in his career is the amount of stick, and sometimes praises, that he gets from social media, particularly on Twitter. The former Golden Arrows forward says he doesn’t read what people say about him on social media, but is very aware of how demanding and fickle football fans can be.

“Since Golden Arrows, I am used to this, it is not new. In this game, people leave their families and go to the stadiums to enjoy football and if you don’t give them what they want they will get angry. Some go to the stadiums to relieve stress so you have to deliver the way they expect you to,” said Gabuza.

“I don’t feel any pressure because as a striker, it is my job to score goals and it starts at training,” he added.

The 32-year-old continued: “People love football. I don’t go on social media and I hear people on the streets and wherever I go, I know if people expect you do what you are good at and if you don’t, they will be disappointed and if you do good, they will pat you on the back. This is part of football and you have to understand. I am the player I am because of the fans.”
