Baxter’s ‘pro’ call at Chiefs

Stuart Baxter says when it came to continental competitions, it should not be a question of patriotism, but rather professionalism.

“Kaizer Motaung asked a question: ‘Will this affect us if we send our full squad to a game that we know is probably beyond us [referring to a Champions League game away to ASEC Mimosas in Baxter’s time at Chiefs].

“Twenty-four hours later after they return, we play Free State Stars in a very important league game.

“What do you think’? I said, it’s going to compromise us. I know we had a lot of shouting about not being patriotic, it is being professional,” said Baxter.

“Chiefs have been accused of not taking Caf club competitions seriously in the past. Amakhosi refused to participate in the Caf Champions League tournament a few seasons ago after they won the league, which led to Caf ban Chiefs from the competition. The sanction was lifted later when the Naturena outfit won the league title and Nedbank Cup in one season under the mentorship of Baxter.”
