Salary demand stalls Pienaar’s City move

Phakaaathi has learnt that high salary demands are stalling Steven Pienaar’s move to Cape Town City.

Pienaar is said to have been earning around R500 000 a month at Bidvest Wits and is looking for a salary closer to that amount.

A source close to Cape Town City told Phakaaathi that the club is keen to add the experienced midfielder, but the parties can’t agree on his salary.

“City do not have a huge financial muscle like Wits, so they can’t afford to pay him a lot of money. They want him to lower his salary. If he doesn’t want to then the deal is off,” said the source.

Meanwhile, Ajax Cape Town are said to have held unofficial talks with the former Everton and Sunderland midfielder, but were scared off by his salary demands.

Pienaar is currently a free agent after he was released by Wits during the January transfer.
