Stars set to release former Pirates duo?

Free State Stars are said to be considering releasing Patrick Phungwayo and Rooi Mahamutsa at the end of the season.

The former Orlando Pirates duo’s contracts are set to expire at the end of June and according to a source close to Stars, they will not be renewed.

Phungwayo was a regular at the beginning of the season, but has been reduced into a spectator since coach Nikola Kavazovic took over in December.

Mahamutsa, who is turning 38 in October is set to be released because of his game.

A source said: “The coach has not been impressed by Phungwayo since his arrival and has recommended that he must be released. As for Mahamutsa, Nikola (Kavazovic) likes his robust approach, but feels that age is catching up with him. He wants a younger defender in that central defensive role, so he will also be let go in June.”
