Motaung explains Chiefs’ decision to sign one player

Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung has explained the club's decision to sign only Gustavo Paez during the January transfer period.

Chiefs caught many people by surprise when they only signed the Venezuelan striker out of the four players that were undergoing trial at the club, but Motaung says there is a perfect explanation for this.

“I believe that, if teams know what they are doing, there shouldn’t be a lot of activity during the middle of the season. You only go to the market if your setup is not up to scratch, and you obviously need to plug some gaps to be able to survive; or if you’re in a situation where you’re not only in the driver’s seat, but you also want to plug one or two gaps,” said Motaung during a partnership announcement event in Naturena on Wednesday.

“For me, the window period in January does not actually excite me because it just tells you that the people who run that space were not organised from the beginning of the season.

“That’s why we only decided to sign one player. And we had other players, but because of the need that the team required, we focused on that area, that’s why we signed this guy [Gustavo Paez].”

Meanwhile, Chiefs have announced that they have signed a three-year partnership with Toyota South Africa.

The Japanese car manufacturer replaces Nissan as Chiefs’ car partner.
