Pirates legend reveals the player that Bafana should be built around

Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates star Thabo Mngomeni says the South African national team needs to be built around Percy Tau.

The former Pirates midfielder believes Tau’s confidence needs to rub off on all his temmates.

“It is painful that we didn’t qualify for the 2018 World Cup, we must try and qualify for the next one. We need to find a common way of playing football in our leagues so that we can qualify for the next one. We’ll qualify if we trust our way of doing things and not change coaches and get coaches from all over the world,” Mngomeni told SABC Sports.

Tau is currently in Zambia with Bafana Bafana for the four nations tournmanent.

“If you talk about Tau, he is the only player in the last two decades that I can say if you select a national team you must start with him and the rest of the players will follow. His mentality is good, he trusts himself and he is confident and I would like for other players to look up to him for inspiration. He is playing well in every game and not just in games against the big clubs.”

Meanwhile, Mngomeni is pleased with Pirates’ improvement this season.

“The Pirates players in the Bafana squad were taken at the right time because they are on form. Pirates is playing better this season, but they need to be consistent. But this season you can tell there is identity on how they play.”
