Safpu lays into Chiefs over Bvuma’s contract

The SA Football Players Union (Safpu) says it has tried in vain to engage Kaizer Chiefs to secure a better deal for goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.

Bvuma made headlines in recent months when reports emerged that he was earning R5 000 a month at Chiefs.

Chiefs later released a statement, saying they operated within a graded structure that provides the framework for contracts with players at development, reserve team and first team level.

“The club would like to place on record that Bvuma has been part of the Kaizer Chiefs development structures since 2013-14. It was not anticipated that the player would be involved with the senior squad this season,” read the Chiefs statement.

Safpu disputes this, saying Chiefs should have offered Bvuma a better deal when he signed a professional contract.

“We have always wanted to engage Chiefs to sort out this issue regarding Bruce Bvuma, but they don’t want to cooperate. So we are forced to go out to the public about this matter,” said Safpu president Tebogo Monyai told The Sowetan.

“Chiefs are claiming that Bvuma’s contract where he earns R5 000 is a junior contract, but if you look at the contract, it was signed on the 28th of March 2017. This is the time when they were promoting him to the first team when some of their goalkeepers were injured.

“This is in contradiction to what Chiefs said in their statement, that this is a junior contract they signed in 2013-14.

“Chiefs went out and said where is the proof? So here is the proof that the contract is actually a senior contract. It is signed by [club chairman] Kaizer Motaung,” added Monyai.

Bvuma’s contract reportedly details how he will earn R8 000 from August, then R10 000 from August 2018 and R12 000 in 2019 and, at the end of his contract, this will increase to R15 000 per month.

The Sowetan reports that Chiefs were given an opportunity to respond Safpu’s allegations, but decided not to comment.

“We acknowledge receipt of your message and do not have any comment to make on this matter,” Chiefs corporate communications manager Vina Maphosa is quoted as saying.
