Stellenbosch FC snap up Robyn Johannes

Former Cape Town City, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Orlando Pirates defender Robyn Johannes has joined Stellenbosch FC.

The 33-year-old joins Stellies as a free agent after he was released by Bidvest Wits prior to the closure of the August transfer window.

Johannes’ agent, Glynn Binkin, confirmed to Phakaaathi that the defender had indeed joined Stellenbosch FC.

“Yes, it’s true that he has joined Stellenbosch. He has signed a two-year deal with an option to extend by a further year,” Binkin told Phakaaathi.

Johannes joins other experienced campaigners like Morgan Gould and Marc Van Heerden at Stellies. The duo was signed during the offseason.

“Robyn brings a wealth of experience to Stellenbosch and is a winner so I think the team will benefit a lot from him, plus he is a leader,” added Binkin.

Meanwhile, Binkin confirmed that City coach Benni McCarthy was keen to be reunited with his former club captain, but the chairperson John Comitis was not interested in the deal.

“Benni wanted him, but John didn’t so we had to look somewhere else. And we are happy with the Stellenbosch deal,” concluded Binkin.

Johannes graduated to the University of Pretoria senior side in 2004.

He was signed by Sundowns a year later and after spending five years with the Brazilians, he joined Pirates in 2010.

The Cape Town-born defender failed to cement his place in the Pirates line-up and was loaned to Golden Arrows for the 2011/12 season.

He was finally released by Pirates in 2013 and joined Maritzburg United as a free agent.

Johannes also played for AmaZulu between 2014 and 2016 and for City between 2016 and 2018.
