TBT: Thabang Rooi

In this week’s instalment of Throwback Thursday, we spoke to former Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabang Rooi.

Rooi says Itumeleng Khune, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Siphiwe Tshabalala were the entertainers in the team during his time with Amakhosi.

The 36-year-old says the trio would tease teammates and joke about everything around them and what they got up to while Jimmy Tau and Tinashe Nengomasha were the disciplinarians.

“We had a lot of players that would discipline others during camp at Chiefs if we got too excited and would stay up seeing silly things,” Rooi told Phakaaathi.

“Jimmy (Tau) and (Tinashe) Nengomasha were always there to make sure we stayed in line because Itu was on another level with his clowning on some days.

“Yeye (Reneilwe Letsholonyane) and Shabba (Siphiwe Tshabalala) would also join Itu with the jokes but we were a family and the singing was led by them as well. That would bring us together and get us in the right mood for the game.”

“Another player I worked with Themba Zwane at Aces. You wouldn’t see him as talkative but he is a big joker. He talks a lot, one time he and Vincent Kobola teased Mohau Tshehla from Joburg to Nelspruit.”
