Tembo on a mission to guide SuperSport to league glory
"I think we need to try and take a different approach and always be there when we talk about the league. We have to build a team that will always fight for the league,” says Tembo.
Kaitano Tembo, the coach of SuperSport United pleased with his side’s 1-1 result against Orlando Pirates: Philip Maeta/Gallo Images.
Kaitano Tembo wants to see his SuperSport United standing heads and shoulders above the rest of the Absa Premiership sides like when they claimed the league title three times in a row under Gavin Hunt between 2008 and 2010.
Speaking at a Nedbank Cup press conference ahead of United’s tie against Cape Town City on Saturday night, Tembo stressed how he wants to see his side counted amongst the title contenders.
“When last did we win the league? When Gavin Hunt was still the coach and we won a treble. Since then we have finished in the top five once. I want to try and change that because SuperSport is a club that should always be fighting for the league,” said Tembo.
“If you have won the treble, I think you should always finish in the top three. I think we got sidetracked about getting into the finals. We get into a final and sometimes we finish eighth. Last season we won a cup and we nearly got relegated. I think we need to try and take a different approach and always be there when we talk about the league. We have to build a team that will always fight for the league,” he added.
The United mentor continued: “When I took over as interim coach last season we were two points off the bottom and if I look at where the club was and we ended up finishing seventh on the log last season. We qualified for the MTN8 and we got into the finals although we lost.”
