Hijackings in Springs

Two hijackings were reported in Springs over the weekend.

The first incident took place on Saturday on the corner of the Paul Kruger Highway and Cowles Street.

According to Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora, a security guard stopped at a robot at 11:15pm, when he noticed another vehicle stopping next to him.

Two men jumped out of the vehicle and one of them approached the driver’s side and pointed a gun at the victim.

“The other hijacker opened the passenger door and jumped into the vehicle,” says Capt Ramphora.

The hijacker pointed his firearm at the victim and ordered him to move over to the middle and he then climbed into the vehicle.

Capt Ramphora says the hijackers drove around and dropped the victim off on the corner of Welgedacht Road and First Avenue in Bakerton.

They robbed the victim of his bulletproof vest, two cellphones and a service firearm before they drove away in his red Opel Corsa.

“The car is marked with Stallion Security stickers on the doors,” says Capt Ramphora.

The victim stopped an oncoming vehicle and also the police who were doing patrols in the area at the time. They took him to the police station for a statement.

Capt Ramphora adds while the victim was at the charge office writing his statement he received a phone call from the tracking company informing him his vehicle was found in an open veld next to the N12 highway near Persida.

The police only found the bulletproof vest in the car.

No shots were fired.

The second incident took place on Saturday at 7pm on Thema Road.

According to the victim, he stopped to give three men a lift to New Era Station.

“When the victim stopped at the station, the one hijacker seated in the front of the vehicle, pointed a firearm at him,” says Capt Ramphora.

The victim managed to press the tracker alert button before jumping out of the vehicle and running away.

One shot was fired, but no one was injured.

The three hijackers fled the scene in the victim’s Toyota Quantum.

The victim was notified that his vehicle was recovered in Wattville.

No arrests have been made.
