Crime in brief

Hijackings are on the increase and the Springs police warns the public to be vigilant.

On March 6, at 8.10pm, a man and his girlfriend were hijacked in Hills Road, Selection Park.

According to Springs police spokesman Warrant Officer Amanda Greybe, the couple was driving down Nigel Road, when they turned into Hills Road.

“They stopped to talk, but left the motor running,” said Greybe.

They were approached by three unknown men who pointed rifles at them.

Greybe added that one hijacker went to the driver’s side and one to the passenger’s side and pulled both occupants from the vehicle.

The three hijackers got into the dark grey Mercedes Benz and drove off.

They took a laptop, bank cards, three cell phones and two iPhones.

Another hijacking took place on March 7,  in Springs West Road, Pollak Park.

At 4.30am, a man was on his way to Jet Park to buy scrap, when he became tired and stopped to have a rest, not far from McDonalds.

Greybe said while he was resting, he heard a knock on the passenger’s side window.

“He politely asked the man to come to the driver’s side of his silver Mazda Drifter,” said Greybe.

The man explained he had had a breakdown and sought help.

The victim offered his help and they drove towards Pollak Park where the passenger pointed out a small white bakkie next to the road.

Greybe added the driver of the bakkie got out of the vehicle and approached the victim.

He pointed a firearm at the victim and ordered him to get out of the vehicle.

She said he managed to run away, and the two hijackers drove off in the victim’s car.

It is not sure if they came back for the white bakkie, but at the time of the hijacking, they left it there.

The third hijacking also took place on March 7.

At 8.50pm, a man and his friends were sitting in a silver grey Mercedes Benz on the side of South Main Reef Road in New State Areas.

Many cars were passing them but they noticed a green VW Jetta stopping in front of them.

Three men got out of the Jetta and approached the group of friends in the car.

Greybe said the ignition was off at the time.

“One man was armed and pointed the firearm at the driver and ordered all of the occupants to get out of the vehicle and lie down on the ground,” added Greybe.

The armed hijacker searched the pockets of the driver and took his iPhone.

The three hijackers got into the car and drove off.

The driver of the green Jetta followed the hijacked car.

A business robbery was reported on march 8, at 7.30pm in Grant Street, New State Areas.

According to Greybe a shop owner and a worker were inside the shop when five men entered.

Two of the men were armed with rifles and one with a handgun.

One of the armed robbers was standing next to the shop owner at the counter and ordered him to open the till.

“Another robber assaulted the owner’s helper and he was bleeding,” added Greybe.

The robbers took off with cigarettes and cash.

No shots were fired in any of the cases.
