City of Ekhurhuleni Athletics Club celebrated for momentous achievement

The City of Ekurhuleni Athletics Club members were celebrated for finishing the Comrades Marathon.

The City of Ekurhuleni Athletics Club members who participated in the Comrades Marathon were celebrated on July 19 at Germiston Lake.

The 12 members were lauded for the dedication and strength they demonstrated by finishing the 89km marathon. The event’s guest speakers, Ennie Manzini and Rosemary Rakhalakane, served as an example of how far one can go if they set their minds to their goals.

Manzini ran the marathon 11 times and has six Bill Rowan medals. Rakhalakane holds 20 comrades’ medals, which include 13 bronze medals.

Mokgalong Nchabeleng secured the Bill Rowan after crossing the finish line in seven hours and 55 minutes. This marked his fourth time completing the comrades and his third Bill Rowan.

Kamogelo Phogole secured the silver medal after crossing the finish line.

The club’s marketing manager, Noko Matlou, said he felt honoured to have completed his fourth Comrades Marathon in eight hours and 58 minutes.

He added that receiving the Bill Rowan medal is an achievement that serves as motivation to keep up the momentum.

“Last year I got the bronze medal, so this year’s victory encourages me to maintain the standard I have set for myself,” Matlou said.

Matlou concluded by congratulating the club’s members.

“We are proud of them for continuing to put the city on the map,” he said.
