Issues in the closet

Homosexuality has never been a widely accepted way of life, whether that be in the community or behind the closed doors of the family home.

Although, it would seem as though people in general are slowly becoming more accepting of the homosexual lifestyle.

Same sex marriage became legal in South Africa in November 2006, effectively making South Africa the first African country to legalise gay marriage.

Coming out as an openly gay person can be very stressful for the person involved. It can also be extremely difficult for the families of that person to accept.

Here are a few tips you can try if you want to come out to your family:

*before taking any action, it is recommended that you come to terms with your own sexuality.

*Make sure of your sexual orientation.

*Ensure that it will be safe for you to tell people.

*Prepare yourself adequately for any questions anyone might have.

*Come out to your close friends first.

*Don’t beat around the bush. Be frank and firm.

*Give your friends and family time to come to terms with your sexuality.

*Be prepared for reactions that may disappoint you.

*Always be willing to discuss your sexual orientation with people who are sincerely interested.

According to Rev Scott Manny at SpringsCare some of the issues homosexuals face when coming out of the closet are:

*guilt,

*morality and

*acceptance from their community or family.

Coming out of the closet is a process and should not be rushed in any way.

It is advised that people wanting to come out of the closet should take their time and should first accept themselves before expecting anyone else to accept them.
