Streets in a mess

A long-time resident wrote this letter.

Hodgson Park in Strubenvale has just been mowed after the grass was at least a metre high.

The mowing was done by about eight workers using brush cutters where one tractor would take an hour these workers took a whole day to mess up the park.

As always, work was done by the odd worker or workers, when they were not lying in the shade for hours at a time.

Needless to say a mess was created and left behind when they were finished.

A supervisor, I think, brought them to the park and also fetched them at the end of the day.

None of them, including the supervisor, have any pride in the work being done.

The shoddy workmanship that they display is unbelievable.

When they leave, the park is in a worse condition than it was before they arrived.

All the cut grass falls in the road and is left like that to clog drains and to look terrible.

The grass, trees and rubbish scattered all over the place is just left there, making the park look like a dump site.

As to the weeds growing all along the streets, in the culverts, these are never cut because as I am told by these cleaners that is the roads department’s problem.

These workers claim it is not their job to clean, they are only paid to cut which even that they make a complete mess of.

These same people strike for higher wages when they have no idea what a day’s work entails.

No work ethic and no pride in work done.

Surely they are given some training and guidance before being allowed to go out and make a mess?

Does no-one keep an eye on how these people work and see that things are cleaned and tidied up at the end of the day?

Are the workers in charge and able to just do as they please? If this is the case, it is time that things are once again put right.

The way things are being done now will only end in disaster as everything is being destroyed and will, in the future, cost a fortune to replace and repair at the taxpayers’ expense.

Hoping that someone in the municipality will take notice and make sure that in future work that is paid for gets done.

Disgusted long-time resident.

* The metro acknowledges the concern and wishes to state that we are doing everything that we could possibly do to try and catch up with the grass grown during the holiday season where heavy rains were experienced.

We also want to put on record that the park in question was not cut by municipal employees but by a contractor. We will take the matter up with the contractor.

We would also like to urge residents to be patient as the standard will surely improve on the following cuts as the grass will be cut while it is still short to avoid grass clippings on the road.

The residents around the parks are urged not to litter or dump refuse in the parks as it creates problems when the grass is being cut.
