Slain DA councillor laid to rest after tragic Sasolburg shooting
Dozens of mourners packed Zamdela Community Hall to bid a heartbreaking farewell to slain Metsimaholo DA councillor Thulani 'Mike' Mbana, whose murder remains shrouded in unanswered questions.
SASOLBURG – Grief and heartbreak filled the Zamdela Community Hall today as slain DA councillor Thulani Mbana was laid to rest.
Affectionately known as Mike, the Metsimaholo ward councillor was shot and killed at his family home in Sasolburg in a shocking attack that left his loved ones and political colleagues devastated.
His murder sent shockwaves through the community, particularly coming just days before the local government elections.
While the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remain unclear, police investigations are ongoing, and no arrests have been made, leaving the family desperate for answers and justice.
The Zamdela Community Hall was packed with mourners who gathered to give Mike a dignified send-off. Party leaders, political representatives, former councillors and community members gathered to listen to speeches and pay tribute to the fallen councillor, reflecting on his life and contribution.
Among those in attendance were DA Free State provincial leaders, including Dr Igor Scheurkogel and DA member of the Free State Provincial Legislature Lerato Khakhu.
Midvaal Local Municipality Mayor Peter Teixeira also joined DA representatives from Emfuleni, including Duncan Mthembu and Tumelo Mashigo. Former political leaders, including Jack Malindi and the ANC’s Fikile Mosokweni, were also present to pay their last respects.
Beyond the political tributes, the family’s pain painted the clearest picture of a loss they are struggling to comprehend. Family representative Lwazi Mbana said the family was still battling to come to terms with another devastating tragedy.
“In January we were burying one of our brothers, and no one wanted to leave after the burial. We never knew that today we would be burying another. Mike did not die.
If you are under the impression that Mike died, he didn’t die, he passed on,” he said.
Despite their heartbreak, he said the family remained hopeful that God would carry them through the difficult period.
“Even though our hearts are ripped apart, we know that the Lord will see us. Rest in peace, Michael. You were a gentleman,” he said.
He also had a heartfelt message for Mbana’s wife, who was visibly overcome with emotion throughout the funeral service.
“I’ve seen you trying to act tough. Stay strong, my sister. We know you are broken, but in the end, the Lord’s will is going to happen,” he said.
Another family member, Mongezi Xokisa, added that the family had lost someone they regarded as a true hero during these incredibly difficult times.
