WATCH: Zone24 residents cook on the Golden Highway

In one of the most peaceful and nonviolent protest residents from Zone24 in Sebokeng cooked in the middle of the road – they haven’t had electricity in many months.

Residents of one of Vaal Triangle’s poorest areas held a peaceful protest on Monday.

About 100 protesters barricaded the Golden Highway from 04:00am claiming that they haven’t had electricity for many months and they have had enough.

The community took the plunge on Monday with pots and braai stands and cooked.

“We will sit on the Golden Highway until our demands are met,” one of the protestors told Sedibeng Ster.

No car made movements on the road, young girls were playing hopscotch and young boys were playing football.

When asked what they are doing sitting in the middle of the road, one of the residents said: “we have problems with electricity, we have engaged with ward counsellor Makgoadi and Raditsela and we still do not have electricity.”

The residents say they have been attending many meetings and promised electricity.

“We are not leaving up until we get electricity.”

We are not fighting with motorists; we are having a nonviolent protest.”
