MIDVAAL. – The weather might have been cold, but the racing was hot!
The Vaal Triangle Cycling Club in collaboration with Sedibeng Cycling hosted a first of its kind criterium race at the Midvaal Raceway on Saturday, 20 August.
Although there are quite a few road races on the local racing calendar, few of them are on a closed circuit.
A criterium, or crit, is a bike race consisting of several laps around a closed circuit, the length of each lap or circuit ranging from about 400 m to 10,000 m.
The fast and flat Midvaal Race Course – about 2.4 km in length – provided the setting for Saturday’s crit racing.
Entrants were divided into three racing groups based on seeding and experience.
The three races would start off with a gentle neutralised lap around the circuit, but it wasn’t long before the first pedals were turned in anger, and soon the racing was on!
According to Massimo Guglielmi of Sedibeng Cycling the event was well supported by local cyclists.
“We had a great turnout, and we are looking forward to announcing our next date!” Guglielmi said.
