Sasol Mining employees join forces to keep girls at school
SASOLBURG. - More than 350 girls in Thuto ke Lesedi Secondary School in Zamdela, Sasolburg will have a greater chance of staying in school to reach their full potential, thanks to a donation of sanitary hygiene products from Sasol Mining employees, in partnership with KeyCare.
Representatives of Sasol Mining and KeyCare recently visited Thuto ke Lesedi Secondary School to hand over a portion of a year’s supply of sanitary towels to girls from Grade 8 through to Grade 12.
According to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), not being able to afford sanitary towels results in both absenteeism and increased dropout rates. One UNESCO report revealed that one in 10 girls in Sub-Saharan Africa misses school during their menstrual cycle.
This gesture by Sasol Mining will help eradicate absenteeism among young girls, who often skip school when they do not have access to basic sanitary protection during their menstrual cycles.
