Lift club members targeted on the way to work

Taxi patrollers are employed to protect the taxi business and support the marshals at taxi ranks. They do not have the authority to take people out of vehicles.

The police in Vanderbijlpark are investigating a case of assault, which was reported on January 12, following an incident where alleged taxi operators assaulted a motorist travelling with his colleagues to work.

It is reported that the man and two colleagues, as part of a lift club, were on their way to work at around 06:14.

While driving, they were pursued by three unknown vehicles and was eventually stopped along Delfos Street, not far from their workplace.

Six suspects approached the vehicle and started to assault the complainant. The suspects informed the complainant that they were from a certain taxi association and accused him of transporting people for remuneration without a valid permit.

The preliminary investigation on the case has been conducted and the docket will be taken to the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision on 15 January 2026.
