Botched Cash in Transit heist leaves robbers with an egg on the face
When an unknown number of robbers tried to blow a cash van on the Golden Highway between Zone 19 and Boitumelo during a Cash in Transit (CIT) heist, their attempt didn’t material.
SEBOKENG – Following the big bang explosion heard by locals near the scene of crime, residents came out in their numbers in an effort to feast on the money.
Sirens of police vehicles who were attending to the scene left hungry residents furious.
When cops arrived, they were turned away by furious community members who reportedly damage their vehicle.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, National police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the police in Gauteng are searching for an unknown number of suspects following an attempt cash in transit robbery.
“It reported that the driver of a cash truck and his crew member were driving along the above-mentioned route when their vehicle suddenly came under fire from suspects who were traveling in a white Mercedes-Benz sedan,” he said.
Netshiunda further added that the cash truck eventually lost control and crushed into a ditch where it came to a standstill.
“Flying Squad police members who were in the vicinity responded to the incident and their vehicle was damaged, reportedly by community members who wanted to help themselves to the cash,” he said.
Netshiunda said no police officer and security guards were injured, and no money was stolen.
“Community members are warned not to contaminate any crime scene in anyway as that may temper with crucial evidence.
Taking left-over money during a cash in transit robbery constitutes a crime and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.
