Kookrus man (61) arrested for murdering friend (62) over money

The suspect allegedly beat the deceased with a wooden stick, which he had found in the deceased’s room.

MEYERTON. – An elderly male (61) was arrested at a smallholding in Danie Bezuidenhout Street in Kookrus on Tuesday 7 May following the alleged murder of his friend.

According to Const Tlaleng Moloi, a spokesperson for the Meyerton Police, police received a complaint about a murder which had taken place near the Kookrus Railway Station.

“Upon arrival at the crime scene, the police found the lifeless body of a male aged 62 facing upwards with bruises and blood on the upper part of his body. The body was declared dead at the scene by the paramedics,” Moloi said.

“According to information gathered, the suspect and the deceased had a fight over the money that the deceased was owing to the suspect,” Moloi told Vaalweekblad.

It is further alleged that the suspect went to the deceased, asking him for his money.

“They allegedly had an argument and a fight ensued. The deceased is said to have punched the suspect in the face and the suspect then went to the deceased’s room, collected a wooden stick and assaulted him,” Moloi explained.

The arrested suspect will appear in the Meyerton Magistrate’s Court soon.

Following this incident, Meyerton’s acting station commander, Lt Col Johan de Winnaar, made an appeal to the community not to use violence as a way to resolve issues.

“The path of non-violence, though sometimes more difficult, ultimately leads to more positive and enduring results. The key is to think of intelligent solutions that will also prevent you from getting into trouble,” De Winnaar said.
