NWU excited about new recreational area for students

The area, previously used as a dumping site, has been transformed into a vibrant space for students to relax and socialise.

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus boasts a new recreational area for its students staying in the Longfellow and Ebukhosini residences.

The area, previously used as a dumping site, has been transformed into a vibrant space for students to relax and socialise thanks to Buhle Houses (Pty) Ltd. from whom the NWU leases the residences.

It includes a fully paved area with a stage, toilets, a small building that can be used as a tuck shop or a bar when an event is hosted on the premises, as well as two basketball rings for the sporty students.

The facility was officially handed over to the NWU at a special function and is now open for use. Herman Steyn, director for special projects at the Vanderbijilpark Campus, says this new addition provides students with a welcoming environment to relax and participate in recreational activities.

“The facility aligns with the campus’ commitment to fostering a well-rounded educational experience for its students.”.

Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, says the university is excited about this initiative.

“As the university continues to prioritise the well-being and satisfaction of its students, the new recreational area stands as a testament to the NWU’s commitment to providing a holistic and enriching campus experience. Students can look forward to making lasting memories and fostering a sense of community in this new space. The opening of the recreational area marks an exciting development for our students, and it is sure to become a hub of student life and activity for years to come,” she adds.
