River Square substation gets colourful makeover

A dull substation has been reinvented through colour, creativity and community collaboration.

VEREENIGING – River Square Shopping Centre has completed a community upliftment project in partnership with PNA and the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Art Department, aimed at transforming a local utility structure into a visually engaging landmark.

The project focused on the exterior mini substation near Entrance 2 of the shopping centre.

River Square’s mini substation comes to life: a vibrant mural by VUT art students, brought to life with PNA’s support, now brightens the community space.

Before the mural work began, River Square carried out structural repairs, including fixing the roof and doors, ensuring the space was safe and ready for artistic work.

Once the repairs were completed, a group of VUT art students created a vibrant mural, turning what was previously a standard utility structure into a colourful public art piece. The mural was made possible with paint and materials sponsored by PNA, allowing the students to fully realise their artistic vision.

River Square emphasised that the initiative reflects a commitment to creativity, local collaboration, and the enhancement of shared spaces. The mural also highlights the potential for public art to contribute to community pride and engagement.

The students responsible for the mural include Ms Amazing Sithole, Mr Toka Ramoeletsi, Mr Thabo Moloi, Mr Amogelang Muthadi, Mr Teboho Motingoe, Ms Azama Muyumba, Ms Matshepo Thibudi, and Mr Kutlwano Modise.

Their work represents a combination of creativity and dedication, bringing a new dimension of colour and personality to the shopping centre environment.

River Square noted that this project is part of ongoing efforts to support youth development, artistic expression, and community engagement, with the mural standing as a symbol of local talent and partnership.

The shopping centre encourages visitors and residents alike to view the mural and experience the revitalised space firsthand.
