Additional sluice gate to be opened at Vaal Dam
Authorities will open a second sluice gate at the Vaal Dam at 10:00.
DENEYSVILLE – An additional sluice gate will be opened at the Vaal Dam at 10:00, increasing the number of open gates to two, following rising water levels.
A message circulated on Monday, December 29, indicated that authorities had recommended the opening of another gate at the dam.
“For the Vaal Dam, the recommendation today is to open another gate at 10:00. Two gates will then be open,” the message stated.
In contrast, discharge at the Bloemhof Dam is expected to remain unchanged, with a recommendation that outflows be maintained at 300 cubic metres per second.
Prior to the opening of the additional sluice gate on 29 December, the Vaal Dam was recorded at 103.55% capacity. At the time, inflow into the dam measured 370.8 cubic metres per second, while outflow stood at 116.7 cubic metres per second.
Authorities continue to monitor dam levels amid sustained inflows, with further updates expected should conditions change.
