Midvaal launches R47 million substation project to boost electricity capacity
Midvaal has begun construction of a R47 million substation aimed at boosting electricity capacity, supporting local SMMEs and creating jobs.
The Midvaal Local Municipality has begun construction of a R47 million substation aimed at increasing electricity capacity and improving distribution in the area.
According to the municipality, the project includes the construction of a substation terrace, installation of an earth mat, and the building of plinths and foundations in line with Eskom standards. The development will also feature an 88kV control room equipped with ventilation systems and safety signage.
Additional infrastructure will include 11kV switching rooms, a control room, and a load control room. An oil-holding dam for the 88/11kV transformers will also be constructed in compliance with Eskom requirements.
The municipality said the project covers the full supply, delivery, installation, testing, commissioning and handover of the facility, including all auxiliary equipment.
As part of its local economic development efforts, the municipality has appointed 10 local SMMEs to participate in the project, with work ranging from bricklaying to supply and delivery services. At least 26 local labourers are expected to be employed by the end of construction.
The municipality added that accredited on-site training has been provided to local workers in fields such as bricklaying, plumbing, plant operation and occupational health and safety.
The project is intended to strengthen local infrastructure and improve access to electricity services, the municipality said.
