Midvaal approves R2.240 billion budget

Midvaal's largest-ever budget prioritises infrastructure investment and service delivery, with significant funding allocated to water infrastructure, road rehabilitation and public safety initiatives across the municipality.

The Midvaal Local Municipality Council has approved a fully funded budget of R2.240 billion for the 2026/2027 financial year, with major allocations directed towards water infrastructure, road rehabilitation, public safety and service delivery.

Midvaal remains one of the few municipalities in Gauteng to adopt a fully funded budget. Budgeted revenue for the year amounts to R2.240 billion, making it the largest budget in the municipality’s history.

Key allocations include funding for the replacement of ageing water infrastructure, road maintenance and rehabilitation projects, expansion of public safety initiatives, and the upgrading of municipal service delivery capacity.

The budget also provides for continued support measures for pensioners, indigent households and farmers affected by the recent foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.

Tariff increases approved for the new financial year include 6.5% for property rates, 10% for water, 7.5% for refuse collection, 6.5% for sanitation, and 10% for electricity, subject to approval by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).

The budget takes effect from 1 July 2026.
