No it’s not a 50th anniversary, but it is something that might as well just be as celebrated.

Kobus and Elizabeth van Wyk completed their 50th Parkrun together during the 40th Witbank Parkrun.

The couple, residing in Middelburg, came out to eMalahleni on Saturday February 4 to run alongside one another stride for stride among fellow runners and enthusiasts, with the aim to complete their 50th run.

The couple holds the achievement highly among their other achievements which include completing the Comrades and the Two Oceans marathons. Their addiction to the Parkrun began in Middelburg and saw them take to eMalahleni to run their 50th.

“Its ordinary people getting into running from kids to old folks. Fast runners to slow, fit and unfit. Parkrun captivates the spirit of running, camaraderie with no class divisions or boundaries,” said Elizabeth.

“Everybody suffers equally,” added Kobus as he chuckled and caught his breath after completing the run.

Kobus went on to say that Parkrun is a huge family and that it is the closest a non-marathon runner can get to the experience of Comrades.

“It’s a family of runners, everyone is there to push themselves and others to do their best,” Kobus said.

The couple ended the interview in saying a special thanks to the runners of eMalahleni and Witbank Parkrun’s volunteers for making the day a special one to remember.

“One step at a time, one run at a time, and before you know it another milestone has passed,” said the couple.
