Fortify your fortress in eMalahleni – criminals are out on a ‘shopping spree’

Don't be the next victim, secure your home police said as more and more house robberies are reported.

“Secure your house!”

These are only three words, but a stern warning from police that crime is picking up and homeowners should be more vigilant and careful.

This warning from Sergeant David Ratau, a spokesperson from Witbank SAPS follows an armed robbery.

The victim recalled seeing a Chevrolet Captiva with an unknown number plate parked outside his home and grew suspicious.

One of the men came towards the victim, he was allegedly armed and asked the victim if he was expecting someone.
After replying that he wasn’t, two more men stepped out of the car and allegedly dragged the complainant back inside the house.

The victim and his family were taken to a room while the robbers ransacked the home.

After it became quiet, the victim managed to open the door and noticed that all their appliances, phones, watches, laptops, and car keys were gone.

Ratua warned, “Ensure that your gates are locked and the keys cannot be easily reached or left lying around. Security gates with sturdy locks in front of each outer door and burglarproofing on all windows are recommended. An alarm system, preferably connected to an armed response company, can be an effective deterrent. A few panic buttons in different rooms of the house should be installed. An alarm must also be capable of warning the occupants of any intrusion. Large dogs serve as a deterrent; at least one dog should be trained to sleep inside the house.”

This is an ongoing case, as the Witbank police are still investigating the burglary
