Department of Water and Sanitation join forces with municipality to help Ga-Nala conserve water

The campaign helped residents learn more about saving water and electricity in their respective areas.

Emalahleni Local Municipality recently embarked on a quest to create awareness around water conservation and energy saving awareness.

The municipality joined forces with the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) to kick-start the programme at Thubelihle Stadium in Ga-Nala.

The programme was opened with prayer from local elders, with Clr Sizwe Maseko welcoming residents.

“Thank you to all the MMCs and representatives from the DWS for gracing us with your presence. Today’s programme will hopefully leave us with more knowledge than we came with,” Maseko said.

Mildred Nogqala was ecstatic after winning her prize.

MMC for Technical Services Clr Busi Hlumbane emphasised the importance of water conservation, “As we all know the community in Ga-Nala is growing steadfastly, that should be a motivation to all of us to use water sparingly.”

Sipho Mtshweni and Sbusiso Shabangu engaged in a water-conserving dialogue.

She also encouraged residents to pay for their services and to report related water issues.

“This small action can make a big difference in conserving water and ensuring sustainable access for all,” Hlumbane highlighted.

Rhee Mabena from DWS demonstrated easy DIY tips to fix a leaking tap.

Lizzy Nkambule and Maria Mpondo also engaged in a water-conserving dialogue at KG Mall.

He further invited residents to a skit about saving water and electricity, “I would like to invite two people to come and demonstrate a conversation about saving water where one advises the other to save water,” Mabena asked.

The residents were indeed a good sport and managed to entertain the crowd whilst highlighting water-conserving tips in vernac.

Mabena kept the crowd engaged as he further motivated a question-and-answer session.

After he delivered his speech, he asked residents questions in return for a prize.

Residents gave prompt answers such as the Emalahleni Local Municipality’s helpline, and pro-water saving tips for gardeners. Community members were overjoyed with their prizes, raising the mood in the heat-scorched Ga-Nala.

The Water Conservation, Sanitation Hygiene, and Energy Saving Awareness Campaign wrapped up at KG Mall in KwaGuqa Extensions. The Executive Mayor Clr Vusi Nhlapho graced the event with his presence.

The mayor wasted no time and went straight to the order of the day. He warned parents about the increasing cases of concealment of births and newborns found in sewers.

“We need to have difficult conversations about such matters. We have to attend to these matters and have these conversations with our children. I further put all ward councillors to task as they need to strengthen by-laws that prohibit vendors or shop owners from selling black market abortion pills and others,” Nhlapho outlined.

He also thanked the technical department and the Department of Water and Sanitation for providing valuable education on water management practices and emphasised the importance of reporting water leaks to ensure sustainable water access.
