Taxi driver shot and hijacked at Klarinet

The driver had made a brief stop to get himself something to quench his thirst, not knowing he would soon end up a gunwounded man with no vehicle.

A stop at a local tuckshop turned into a nightmare for a taxi driver who got shot and hijacked at night.

According to the police, a man said on May 20, around 20:30, he had stopped at a tuckshop in Klarinet Extension 6 to get a drink.

Shortly after getting back to his taxi, he said a man appeared and opened his vehicle door.

Under the impression that he was just seeking assistance, the driver got out of the taxi, only to be shot by the man.

The gunman got inside the vehicle and fled the scene with the victim’s cellphone, which had been in the taxi.

A case of hijacking and attempted murder was opened at Witbank SAPS, and investigations are currently underway.

The SAPS offers the following tips to help residents stay safe, particularly when driving at night:

  • Keep doors locked and windows closed while driving, especially at night or in isolated areas.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings; avoid distractions such as mobile phones when stopping at intersections or in quiet streets.
  • Do not resist armed hijackers; personal safety is more important than possessions.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to your nearest police station or emergency number.
  • Avoid displaying valuables such as cash, phones, or GPS devices in plain view.
  • Use well-lit, populated areas for parking, and avoid shortcuts through isolated streets or informal settlements.
