Gunmen rule the streets of eMalahleni – 3 separate attacks are reported
The City of Coal has been put on high alert following three violent attacks reported at Witbank SAPS in just two days.
Witbank SAPS is investigating 3 separate armed robberies that took place across eMalahleni over two days.
E-hailing ride ends in robbery
The first incident occurred on the morning of May 26, when a woman’s bolt ride turned into a nightmare.
According to the police, the woman said she had requested a ride to the CBD, but the driver decided to head in a different direction.
Before the passenger could react, the driver stopped to pick up another man, who reportedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at the terrified woman.
The woman said the armed man forcefully covered her eyes with his hand as the car sped towards the N4 highway.
When they reached a secluded area near a river, the woman was taken from the car, robbed of her cellphone, and forced to log into her banking application.
The robbers then transferred every cent of her savings into their own account and left her stranded on the side of the road.

Four robbed at gunpoint on footbridge
The next day, four people crossing a footbridge were forced to hand over their cellphones at gunpoint.
One of the four victims told the police they had been walking over the bridge at around 19:00 when a man suddenly appeared and pointed a firearm at them.
The man made death threats towards the group and fired one shot into the sky. After robbing them of their cellphones, the man fled on foot.
Gang targets breakdown crew
Later that same evening, the violence continued on the Verena road (R544).
According to the police, a man and an auto electrician were called to attend to a broken-down truck, taking two truck batteries with them.
Upon arrival, they discovered the truck’s starter wouldn’t work. The man said they left to fetch a new starter, but when they returned, the driver was nowhere to be found.
A gang of five armed men suddenly appeared, carrying a crowbar, and a screwdriver.
The victims were tied up and robbed of their cellphones, bank cards, and they also took the truck’s new starter.
Moments after the robbers had left, the men managed to untie themselves, only to find that the robbers had also stolen the batteries and a toolbox.
The Witbank SAPS have launched investigations into all three incidents, urging anyone who may have information to come forward.
