NPO addresses GBV issues plaguing uMfolozi community

Gender-based violence issues tackled as 16 Days of Activism draws to a close

HUMAN rights and tackling gender-based violence (GBV) were in focus at a seminar hosted by local NPO, Bajuka at Mzingazi community hall last Tuesday.

Themed ‘Human Rights and Gender-based Violence: Understanding the Connection is Everyone’s Concern’, the symposium emphasised that understanding this connection is essential for everyone, regardless of background or profession.

NPO founder Dr Mamie Madi says their ultimate goal was to inspire a sense of responsibility and collective action among participants, to become advocates for human rights and GBV prevention in their communities.

“This was an opportunity to provide a platform for survivors of GBV to share their stories and experiences, and to facilitate discussions and debate among participants, experts and stakeholders on ways to prevent GBV and promote human rights,” said Madi.

The session identified strategies for policymakers, community leaders and individuals to address GBV and promote human rights.

Tuesday, 10 December marked the end of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, campaign, however, attendees called for this to continue year-round.

Unizulu’s Dr Kanagie Naidoo shared insight on the advancements in the South African Domestic Violence Act, while the Department of Justice presented the judicial perspective on the court’s role in addressing GBV and upholding human rights.

Also in attendance were representatives from Legal Aid South Africa, Lungelo Youth Development NPO, Department of Health, SAPS, local traditional leadership and uMfolozi Municipality.
