Motorists travelling along the N2 near Empangeni are urged to exercise caution owing to major truck congestion on the national route.

This as heavy rains persist across KwaZulu-Natal, including the Zululand region.

Side-tipper trucks destined for the Port of Richards Bay are queuing from Canefields towards the N2 off-ramp leading onto the John Ross highway.

The KZN Department of Transport has urged drivers to exercise extreme caution or delay travel where necessary.

The warning comes amid multiple road crashes on the N2, with the latest being a head-on collision involving two cars near Zinkwazi this (Friday) afternoon.

Port Decongestion Plan
The department said the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) is working with local traffic authorities to minimise congestion and ensure the safety of all road users.

“RTI is now executing a Flood Response Plan, which is focusing on augmenting a Port Decongestion Plan pioneered by Transnet and other role-players including port users.

“As part of traffic management, RTI is working with traffic departments in various municipalities along the N2,” said MEC Siboniso Duma on Friday.

Motorists are also advised to be aware of standing water on several roads together with poor visibility.

Flight delays
The adverse weather conditions have also caused the delay and cancellation of flights to and from Richards Bay.
