Foundation commemorates World Drug Day

The Thabang Xaba Foundation says drugs have no place in communities.

Kwa-Thema – The Thabang Xaba Foundation observed World Drug Day, which is commemorated annually on June 26, at the Central Methodist Church in Kwa-Thema on Sunday.

They commemorated the day in a faith-based sector under the theme ‘breaking chains’.

“The theme is talking about encouraging all those who are victims of drug abuse and other social ills to be able to break the cycle they find themselves in,” said Thabang Xaba, the foundation’s founder.

The programme was led in worship.

Xaba said the theme was highlighting second chances for families and people who are victims of drug abuse and community members who’ve been victimised by drug users.

“We are trying to create a platform that will see all these stakeholders and the communities being in one place talking to the issues of substance abuse and how best they can be tackled,” Xaba continued.

Among the invited stakeholders were EMPD social crime prevention, SAPS social crime prevention, the Local Drug Addiction Committee, social development department, the Department of Health, Ekurhuleni Men’s Forum and the Themba Molefe Foundation.

Addicts from Witpoort Rehabilitation Centre were also present to observe the day.

“We brought this event to the church because we want to start having conversations with it. Most of our churches have been silent with regard to the issue of substance abuse and the very same congregants are the ones affected,” he concluded.

The day was used as a prayer day for different churches to unite in prayer against substance abuse.
