Gearboxx reflects on a successful career

“I always wanted to be an artist.”

Kwa-Thema – Kwaito artist Mduduzi Mnikathi, aka Gearboxx, keeps the kwaito fire burning locally.

Gearboxx started with music in 1997, and his career took off quickly after doing performances for A-listers like Mafikizolo, Mzekezeke, and Zola 7, to name a few.

The 41-year-old said he was always passionate about music and knew he wanted to pursue it full-time.

“I always wanted to be an artist, and after recording my first demo track, Ayoba, I realised I did not make a mistake. The song opened doors for me, made waves on Y-FM Kwaito Hott 99, was on high rotation, and was number one for two months,” he said.

Ntombi Ngcobo featured him on her album African Sexy on a song called Sek’shubile, which was nominated for a South African Music Award in Best Urban Pop in 2010.

One of his milestones was the song he did with a group called Dri35YF, S’blome La Song, which featured on the Zone 14 drama series that aired on SABC 1.

He also has a song, Ntombazane, making waves on local radio stations. He was a runner-up in the Lucky Star Competition in 2021. He plans to release more music.
