High school learners commit suicide
Learners who may be experiencing abuse or need counselling are encouraged to seek help.
Kwa-Thema – The Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is saddened by the death of two Grade Eight learners who committed suicide.
According to a statement from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), a learner from Nigel High School died after consuming poison at home on June 29.
A learner from Geluksdal Secondary School also consumed poison at home on July 4 but died on the way to a nearby medical facility.
“We convey our deepest condolences to the families and school communities of these learners.
“It is concerning that learners will resort to taking their own lives. We request learners to seek assistance for the necessary support,” said Chiloane.
The GDE Psycho-Social Support Team will visit the affected schools to provide the required support to the school community and families once the third term begins.
