Pet owners encouraged to look for symptoms of seizures in dogs
Dog trainer Thulane Manana encouraged pet owners to take the animal to a vet once symptoms appear.
Kwatsaduza – Dog breeder and trainer Thulane Manana encouraged pet owners to take an interest in their animal’s health.
Manana educated pet owners about idiopathic epilepsy in dogs, also known as genetic or congenital epilepsy.
It is a common neurological disorder in dogs, and Manana said there are many causes for seizures.
“The seizures can be a side effect of poisoning, liver disease, low or high blood sugar, kidney disease, electrolyte problems, anaemia, head injury, encephalitis, strokes and brain cancer,” he said.
The clinical signs vary but include twitching in one part of the face, falling to one side, shaking, vocalising, urinating or defecating and paddling limbs.
Pet owners were encouraged to take their animals to a vet once they had identified symptoms.
