Sunday Crew Athletic Club honours members

The event celebrated the runners’ hard work to conquer the annual 89km marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

Kwa-Thema – The 2023 Sunday Crew Athletic Club Comrades Marathon participants were celebrated at an annual gala dinner at Ground Zero on July 15.

The event celebrated their hard work to conquer the annual 89km marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

At the event, various people received several awards. The award categories were for completing the race, for two-time runners who completed their marathons back-to-back in 2022 and 2023, for the top three runners (male and female), for married couples who participated together and for runners who took the initiative to run but could not finish.

The Sunday Crew Athletic Club‘s Steward Selepe received his green number.

The last category was significant because the club wanted to appreciate the runners’ efforts. Steward Selepe received an award for being a 10th-time runner and earned a green number.

Bus driver Sibusiso Mthembu, aka Bean, and timekeeper Neo Moloto received awards as sub-12 runners.
The team’s Thabo Mosheledi said every award was equally important.

“We understand the hard work the runners put in to qualify and compete in the tournament, even getting to the finish line.

“Through this initiative, we hope to motivate the runners to keep at it and to work on improving their time,” he said.

Mosheledi said he hoped that the running club grows, attracting more runners.

“We wish to see more people, especially the young, join this movement. The plan is to see many informal settlements adopt this way of life – taking health and wellness seriously.

“We hope to get more sponsors and supporters in this movement. Any support and sponsorship is always appreciated,” he concluded.
