Court sentences Springs murder suspects

The cards belonging to the deceased were found in the accused’s residence.

Kwatsaduza – Palesa Vilakazi from Springs received a sentence of life imprisonment and 15 years imprisonment for murder and aggravated robbery committed in April 2020.

The incident occurred in Holfontein, Springs, and a passerby found the female body on the back seat of a car.

SAPS regional police spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela said the deceased owned a funeral parlour in Tsakani. Upon investigation, the SAPS arrested a female employee and her boyfriend.

“The cards belonging to the deceased were found at the accused’s residence.

“The boyfriend pleaded guilty in the Springs Magistrate’s Court and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, while Palesa pleaded not guilty, and the State found her guilty, and she was sentenced to life imprisonment,” she said.

District commissioner Major General Anna Sithole commended investigating officer Sergeant Raymond Mogashoa.

“The conviction will serve as a message to other criminals who are terrorising business owners in communities,” she said.

Other recent convictions include that of Vusimuzi Blessing Thwala, sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court for a murder in October 2022.

Albert Mathebula received a 12-year sentence at the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court for an April 2023 murder and illegal immigration.

In the Springs Magistrate’s Court, Johan Potgieter was handed a seven-year sentence for fraud committed in August 2018.
