Kwatsaduza retired nurses mark International Nurses Day with celebration and gratitude

Kwatsaduza retired nurses gathered at Tsakane Community Hall to celebrate International Nurses Day with song, motivation and community spirit.

Tsakani – Kwatsaduza retired nurses commemorated International Nurses Day at the Tsakane Community Hall on May 12 under the theme Our nurses. Our future. Empowering nurses for safer care.

The event served as both a celebration and a reflection on the journey they have travelled as nurses over the years.

The jubilee celebration was filled with singing, laughter, motivational talks and health education.

Chairperson of the organisation, Fikile Mabuza, said the day reminded members that nursing is more than just a profession.

“This day serves as a reminder that nursing is not just a career, but a calling,” said Mabuza.

Mabuza said the celebration was also about appreciating life and unity among retired nurses.

“Today, we are commemorating ourselves and thanking God for keeping us alive through all these years. We are retired nurses, but not tired. We are stronger than before,” she said.

She explained that the organisation continues to support communities through donations and outreach programmes.

Members regularly donate clothing and non-perishable food items to churches and orphanages.

“We come together to celebrate our birthdays, our livelihood and to support one another.

“We also support nurses who are still working because the challenges they face still affect us,” she added.

Mabuza encouraged other retired nurses to join the organisation, saying it is not only focused on funerals but on active living and support.

“We are not a burial society. We are a vibrant group that praises the Lord, visits the sick, supports members in hospital and spends time together getting fresh air and new ideas,” she said.

Among those present at the venue were guest speaker Nompi Haukop and Lowani Richard Serongwa, Director of Nursing Practice, who represented MEC Faith Mazibuko.

Serongwa said they attended the event to celebrate International Nurses Day with retired nurses.

He mentioned that the day commemorates the birth of Florence Nightingale, who was born on May 12.

“We are here to say thank you to the nurses for the dedication, compassion and service they gave during their years in the nursing profession.

“We recognise and appreciate the work they have done,” said Serongwa.

He added that retired nurses have set a strong standard for those currently in the profession and encouraged them to continue serving their communities through health education and guidance.
