Qedusizi Primary honours June 16 through education and remembrance

Qedusizi Primary School brings June 16 history to life for learners in Kwa-Thema

Kwa-Thema – Qedusizi Primary School commemorated Youth Day in style on June 12 by educating learners about the significance of June 16 and its role in shaping South Africa’s history.

Teachers and staff members embraced the occasion by dressing in school uniforms, symbolising the experiences of the youth who participated in the 1976 Soweto Uprising and paying tribute to their courage and sacrifice.

The school hosted a variety of special activities and performances to teach learners about the importance of Youth Day and to encourage them to appreciate the freedoms and opportunities they enjoy today.

Through songs, poetry, educational presentations and cultural performances, learners reflected on the struggles of the youth of 1976 and the importance of standing up for their rights.

Teachers and learners alike highlighted the significance of commemorating June 16, emphasising the need to preserve the legacy of those who fought for equal education and a better future for generations to come.

School principal George Ngoma said it was important for learners to understand the history behind Youth Day and the sacrifices made by young people during the struggle against apartheid.

“As a school, we believe it is our responsibility to ensure that learners know and appreciate the history of our country.

“June 16 reminds us of the bravery and determination of young people who fought for their right to quality education.

“We want our learners to be inspired by their courage and to understand that they, too, have the power to make a positive difference in society,” said Ngoma.
