Be cautious while in public spaces

“There has been an increase in these crimes when compared to the statistics of May.”

Several crimes of concern were highlighted by Edenvale SAPS following the 84 arrests made during the month of June.

Capt Jean Olckers, Edenvale SAPS spokesperson, said there was an increase in the number of cases of robbery with firearms, common assault and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

“There has been an increase in these crimes when compared to the statistics of May,” said Olckers.

He said the crimes were occurring across Edenvale in both public and private settings.

Olckers said the number of cases of theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles still remain high.

“Although there was a decrease in June, compared to May, the number of cases reported to us is a concern.”

Olckers urged community members to take precautions while in public areas.

Preventative measures he provided included:

• Do not openly display valuables such as phones or watches while in public.

• Avoid walking alone in dark or secluded areas.

• Avoid conflict.

• Do not abuse liquor.

• Park your vehicle in a secure area and ensure that it is locked.

• Do not leave valuables such as company laptops, cellphones, wallets or handbags in cars.

Olckers reminded community members that if they feel threatened or notice any suspicious activity they should contact the police.
