SAPS seizes counterfeit goods worth R11.4m in Johannesburg operation
The SAPS seized counterfeit goods valued at R11.4m during a joint operation in Johannesburg Central, targeting the illicit trade of fake clothing, shoes, and production equipment.
The SAPS, through the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit, in collaboration with the national head office, Border Police, Public Order Police, Commercial Unit, and brand protectors, executed a successful operation in Johannesburg Central on November 7.
The co-ordinated enforcement action targeted businesses and suppliers involved in the sale and distribution of counterfeit goods.

During the operation, officers seized a significant quantity of counterfeit clothing, shoes, embroidery and printing machines, stickers, and packaging materials – all estimated to be worth approximately R11.4m.

“The operation demonstrates the SAPS Gauteng Counterfeit Unit’s ongoing commitment to dismantling the counterfeit goods supply chain and protecting legitimate businesses and consumers,” the police said in a statement.

SAPS reiterated that the trade in counterfeit goods not only harms local businesses but also contributes to job losses, tax evasion, and potential health and safety risks for consumers.
“These operations form part of a broader national strategy to curb the economic and social impact of counterfeit trade,” SAPS added.

The police commended the collaboration between specialised units and brand protectors, highlighting that such partnerships are vital in identifying, tracing, and removing counterfeit products from the market.
SAPS has urged the public to report any suspicious activity or businesses selling counterfeit items to their nearest police station or through the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111.
