IPID probes Etwatwa police after woman is fatally shot in car

IPID said it’s investigating the death of a woman allegedly due to police action.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a case of murder after Etwatwa police officers allegedly shot and killed a woman on November 12 in Durand Road, Putfontein.

According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping, while the two police officers were patrolling along Vermeulen and Durant roads they tried to stop a maroon BMW with five occupants (four men and a woman) but it drove off.

“The police gave chase with blue lights and sirens but the BMW refused to stop,” said Suping.

“The officers alleged that they heard gun shots coming from the BMW and retaliated by firing two warning shots into the air and one in the direction of the BMW.

“The BMW eventually stopped. The police further alleged that after the car stopped three male occupants got out and ran into a nearby veld, but later came back to the scene. The officers said the driver and female occupant remained in the car.

“When the police approached the car they noticed that the female occupant, who was sitting in the back, had been shot in the neck.”

An ambulance was called and the woman was declared dead on the scene.

Her body was taken to the Springs Mortuary.

IPID will disclose the outcome once the investigation is complete.
