Major sewer line replacement project commences in Ward 33

Residents and motorists are urged to be patient as work to replace the sewer line from Ebor Avenue to Helen Joseph and up to the corner of Cato Road is underway. Traffic will be disrupted during the five months long project.

THE long-awaited replacement of the sewer line from Ebor Avenue to Helen Joseph and up to the corner of Cato Road, just outside the St Augustine’s Hospital exit, is finally underway and is expected to take up to five months to complete.

The project, which has been awarded to Sir Plant Civils by the eThekwini Municipality Water and Sanitation Unit, commenced with surveillance and site assessments in late November 2024. A request from Ward 33 Councillor Fran Kristopher to commence the work after the festive season was granted by the company and they broke ground last week Tuesday.

With work underway, Kristopher urged for community support and patience. “We understand the inconvenience that this project may cause, but it is essential for the long-term improvement of the municipal infrastructure in the area,” said Kristopher. She added, “I requested for the contractors to begin their work in the first week of January, after their recess break, to avoid disrupting traffic and the influx of holidaymakers and visitors to our ward during the festive season.”

The project is expected to be completed in May. Kristopher highlighted the importance of community involvement in the project and stated that signage to redirect traffic will be put in place for affected areas. The sewer line replacement is expected to bring significant improvements to the area.

“We are looking forward to the much-needed replacement of a better sewer line,” Kristopher added. “Further communication will be shared in due course surrounding this project. Thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation during this period.”

For more information on the project, residents can contact the community liaison officer, Ben Thompson, on 073 959 2752. “You are also more than welcome to contact me to direct you to your project steering committee who are made up of residents and community stakeholders of Ward 33. Further communication will be shared in due course surrounding this project,” said Kristopher.

Kristopher can be reached via email: cllr.frankay@gmail.com or contact 062 126 8731 for Ward 33 matters.
