Robotics teens to jet off to USA

A trip to the USA is a dream come true for four Grade 12 learners of George Campbell School of Technology, as they take they take their robotics skills to compete among counterparts from across the globe.

FOUR teenagers are set to step into another level of mechatronics robotics when they engage with the world’s best in engineering and design in a competition in New York, USA next month.

The Grade 12 learners from George Campbell School of Technology could not hide their excitement as they shared about their involvement in robotics and ultimately the upcoming trip to the USA. Alexander Ebden, Raheem Cassim, Caleb Culbert and Sayen Govindan are studying digital electronics and civil construction at the school.
“This is the very first robotics competition we have ever been invited to. It is a memorable event in our lives and we are excited to represent our school and the country at large. We cannot downplay the nerves but the bigger picture is staring at us, and we cannot falter,” they said.

It would be the first time the lads have taken an international trip, except for Caleb, who has been to Australia in a personal capacity.
The 17-year-olds added that the experience would be more than just robotics. “It will bring about new opportunities, sightseeing, renewed inspiration and long-lasting relations within the industry.”

Headmaster, Warren Rooy, has assured the team of the school’s unwavering support. “We are extremely proud of this achievement. Although the school has not introduced robotics as a subject code, the team is already galloping to greater heights. Win or lose, their footprint is about development and exposure in the engineering and design discipline.”

The boys emphasised the importance of staying focused, consistent and diligent. As they look beyond Grade 12, they are determined to turn the hobby into a career prospect in robotics or related fields.
