TO honour Women’s Month, the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra will host a two-concert Early Spring Season on Thursday, August 22, and Thursday, August 29, in the Playhouse Opera, each with a women conductor and a woman soloist.

On August 22, renowned Polish British conductor Ewa Strusiska is on the podium to open the Spring Season with Schumann’s enchanting Carnival Opus 9.

Originally written from 1834 to 1835 for piano solo and subtitled Little Scenes on Four Notes, the work consists of 21 variations on a theme by Schubert, representing masked revellers at a carnival.

The internationally acclaimed Panamanian-American maestra Kalena Bovell conducts the second and closing concert of the season. She opens her programme with Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, a popular work for string orchestra.

Highland Gathering (Saturday, August 24)

This year’s annual Fort Nottingham Highland Gathering, taking place in and around Fort Nottingham on Saturday, August 24, looks set to be a bumper event – with a full field of athletes and a great line-up of Scottish performers.

Inspired by the world-famous Braemar Gathering, the Fort Nottingham Highland Gathering is typically a day of nostalgia, heritage and ancient tradition.

Interspersed with the athletics events, in which teams of men and women compete against each other in unusual sporting codes, there will be the rousing pipe and drum bands of the Pietermaritzburg and Durban Caledonian societies, joined this year by visiting members of the Transvaal Scottish.

There will be Scottish and folk dancing, talks and a village market – with stalls of handmade goods and craft items.

There is a beer garden with craft beers and artisanal spirits on sale as well as a variety of food stalls.

Good to Know: Tickets are on sale via Quicket (R120 adults and R70 teenagers while children U12 are free). Bring picnic blankets, sun hats, warm clothing and sunscreen, and make sure no food, drink or glass is brought onto the property. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome. Gates open at 08:00.
