SKISA karate kids ready for 2017

Developing self-defence skills at a young age is important due to the rate of crime in the country and bullying in schools.

THE SKISA Morningside Dojo has opened for 2017 with young Ila and Yadhav Panchpersadh returning to the dojo all smiles and eagerness to succeed further in the sport.

Ila (5) who attends Maris Stella and Yadhav (7) from Clifton School, joined karate in the latter part of 2016 and have attained their red stripe. Both young karatekas train under Sensei Tina Lee Singh (4th Dan SKIF) on a Tuesday and Friday.

Hanshi Sonny Pillay (8th Dan) who is the Karate South Africa and SKISA President, said: “Children are our most valuable assets and the future of our beloved country from which future karate Olympians will emerge. Yes karate is now an Olympic sport, so we encourage the children to start now to be a future Olympian in the sport.”

Sensei Tina Lee mentioned: “Yadhav and Ila are good examples for other kids, and are developing their self-defence skills at a young age which is important due to the rate of crime in the country and bullying in schools. SKISA Morningside takes a stance against bullying and teaches kids how to deal with bullying and not to be bullies.”

She said discipline and respect form the basis for traditional karate teachings and this is core at the SKISA Morningside Dojo, however it is very important for children to also have fun doing the sport.

Lee further urged women and girls to participate in karate and to learn some form of self-defence as women and girls are the most vulnerable groups. She encouraged women and children in the Morningside and Musgrave area to join the SKISA Morningside Dojo.

“We stand against the abuse of women, children and the elderly and we present a platform for you to join and learn how to be a victor and not a victim when it comes to any form of abuse,” she said.
