Tight game for Glenwood

Glenwood beat St Charles by eight runs in a very close game at the weekend.

THE Glenwood first cricket team took on St Charles College in the Coca- Cola T20 provincial final on Friday, 17 February at Sahara Kingsmead.

The Glenwood team arrived at the ground in good spirits, taking confidence from the good performance against DHS the previous weekend. Preparation during the week was good and the boys carried good energy into the match. Glenwood’s captain, Daelen Fynn won the toss and elected to bat first. Cameron Reid and Thamsanqa Kumalo got Glenwood off to a good start, scoring a quick 32 runs of 3.2 overs before Cameron Reid was run out. Thamsanqa Kumalo continued his good form and played very well for his 47 runs.

Glenwood were unable to capitalise on the good start and lost wickets at regular intervals. The St Charles bowlers applied good pressure and forced some silly running between the wickets. This slowed down the scoring rate and Glenwood only managed to get 117 runs of their 20 overs. Kumalo top scored with 47 runs. The Glenwood boys seemed disappointed with their effort with the bat and were determined to put in a better bowling performance.

St Charles batted cautiously upfront and scored at four runs to the over during the power play. They knocked the ball around the ground and waited for any bad ball they could put away. They managed to do this this very well and were running away with the game.

Alex Pillay made the breakthrough when he was swept to deep square leg and Tinotenda Takodza completed a good catch. This turned the game on its head and the Glenwood bowlers took control. Daelen Fynn bowled a great penultimate over which left St Charles needing 11 runs off the last over. Jaden Hendrikse was entrusted to bowl this over and he started well with a dot ball. He then bowled a no ball which gave St Charles some hope. Luckily for Glenwood this did not cost them much as Jaden Hendrikse bowled an exceptionally good final four deliveries only going for three runs and picked up a wicket on the last ball.

Glenwood won the match by eight runs and are now through to the National Finals which takes place in Stellenbosch. This is the first time Glenwood has qualified for Nationals.
